What to Wear to an Engagement Session feat. Allie & Josh
Hi folks! Today we are answering one of our most popular questions about engagement sessions!
The sometimes dreaded ‘What should I wear??’
An engagement session shouldn’t be stressful and so we are here to answer this question by giving you some options, ideas, and advice…so you can enjoy your session and have fun!
Here are 4 things to keep in mind when planning your engagement session outfit.
#1. You don’t need to buy anything!*
I know it’s tempting to want to buy a whole new outfit for the occasion but we actually recommend not doing that and here’s why. During your engagement session, you will be standing, sitting, twirling, and running around with your partner. Wearing something that is comfy is so important! So digging into your closet and wearing something that is worn in is a great idea. Your favourite pair of jeans or a go-to dress is an excellent idea because you are already comfy in it. If you are wearing something brand new or tight or a ‘standing outfit only’ you won’t be 100% comfortable during your shoot and that will really show through in the photos.
We don’t like to tell you what not to wear but our only tips about that would be to stay away from heavy patterns or branded items (Just because that can be distracting and not always timeless in the photos.)
& to avoid both wearing the exact same outfit (Being matchy matchy is a hard look to pull off.) But again that’s just a suggestion, not a rule.
*If you really want to buy something new - we aren’t stopping you! But I would suggest wearing it several times first to make sure it’s worn in a little.
#2. Accessorize/ Layer
This is a great idea for any season! Not only do you get different ‘looks’ for photos you also get something to hold or be apart of your photo. Some accessories ideas are:
-Jackets/sweater
-hat
-Scarf/mittens
-Cozy blanket/ beverage of choice
OR one step further, some couples debate between wanting to really dress up fancy for their photo or be more casual. If this sounds like you- make sure you communicate that to us so we can make sure we plan the location and time to be split between two outfits. Best of both worlds!
#3. Make it personal
We love it when a couple wears or brings something special to the engagement shoot. It just adds a little something special to the photos which equals more memorable, timeless shots. Here are some examples of how couples made it personal.
We have had a couple that wore the outfit they wore on their first date to the engagement session. A couple wore their favourite football jerseys, to what Allie and Josh did, which was both of them wearing his work jackets for a couple of photos.
#4. Dress for the weather/ terrain
I know it sounds a little obvious but it’s a good reminder for your session. We want you to be as comfy as possible and if you are freezing or boiling hot in your clothes that is definitely not going to help you be at ease and have fun during your session. Also, make sure you are wearing proper footwear depending on your location backdrop. We aren’t going to be doing any close-ups on your shoes so don’t sweat those minor details. High heels might sound fun but depending on the location that could be a nightmare for your toes, so choose clothes/ shoes that make sense!
Winter sessions: We love an engagement session in the winter and obviously we can’t control the weather so you will probably be a little chilly. That’s just the way it goes, but here are some ways you can make a winter shoot a little more comfortable:
-dress in layers (mitts, toque, scarf are SO cute in winter portraits.)
-bring hot paws/ hot chocolate/ cozy blanket (They can be in the photos or a reward after- your choice.)
PLUS We often make the winter sessions a few minutes longer so we can take breaks to warm up if necessary.
